Before and After

We are home! (as Ryan already mentioned).  I think I can speak for both of us when I say that now comes the hard part of the journey.  It was easy when we were going and going, but it almost feels like I forgot how to stop.  The end didn't feel real until I reached.  I have no real clue what will be next, but it doesn't concern me.  Things have a way of working themselves out.

I too want to say thank you to everyone that we met on our trip.  I am truly grateful to have shared this journey with all of you and appreciative that you opened your lives, homes, pantries, and hearts to two wayward travelers like Ryan and myself.

People have asked us about the beards; mainly how long they will remain.  I can't speak for Ryan, but I plan on keeping it for a while. Unfortunately that means no before and after shaving/haircut photos.  But Ryan and I foresaw this problem while we were on the road and took photos at Walker lake on the first and last week of our trip wearing the same clothing and in the same place so you could see what eight months of growth looks like.  The results are...

Ryan: 1st Week

Ryan: Final Week

Myself: 1st week

Myself: Final Week

On the last day of the trip we stopped by a liquor store and bought a cheap bottle of "champagne" to drink before the last few miles (Tour De France style).

We finished the Tour De North America; all three countries visited and 9113 miles ridden.  What a life we live in the...

We're Home!

We made it to Dayton, NV this morning (Nov. 14). I wanted to say thank you to the many people out there who took part in our journey--both the people we met out there who took us in, fed us, or just told us a funny story, as well as all of you who have been following our adventure on this site. You made it worth our while, and some of you even saved us from shriveling up in the desert.

Check out the map page for our final milage, and keep checking back for updates and vital statistics, as well as new photo galleries (to the right). And of course, send us an email with the contact link to the left if we do not already have your email address.

Coming Full Circle

We have meant to write something for a while, but things have come up and out of our control time and time again in the last week. For the sake of brevity I will give a short summary of our time in southern California, our day trip to Mexico, and the ride through the desert to Las Vegas.

Filling in Old Maps

After spending nearly two weeks hanging out with our friend Cory in San Francisco, we decided that if we were ever going to finish this thing, we had to leave. The weather had different ideas though, and sent one of the biggest October storms in the Bay's history. It did rain quite a bit and we were happy to have a place to stay, but I couldn't help but laugh at San Francisco's reaction. People were talking about how bad the storm was, but all I could think about was how nice of a Spring day it would have been in Kansas.

Redwoods, Green Buds, & Golden Gates

By the time we left the Redwood National Park Hostel we were soon enough in entering the Emerald Triangle – a combination of Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity counties in California.

The Victory Lap

I am sure One-Eyed Willy's treasure is in there.

This year was the first time I ever really watched the Tour de France. No, it had nothing to do with increased interest in cycling because of being on a bike tour, but rather that we were taking a break at our friend Jamie's house, she had 500 channels, and there are a few shows on Food Network that I didn't want to watch. During those breaks, about the only thing worthy of watching was the Tour.

Wrapping up our Oregon Trail

After passing through Idaho we entered Oregon and looked in Nyssa for a place to take a shower and do laundry. Ryan asked about these services at a gas station the attendant looked a little puzzled and said there was a place laundry mat, but there is no place to take a shower she could recollect. This is a blink town she said. A place where you could just blink as you drive through and never even know it existed. After a couple days in eastern Oregon I tried it – I kept blinking, sometimes closing my eyes for longer periods of time hoping that it would just go away, but I forgot that bicycles don't move as fast as cars and riding with my eyes closed is almost as irresponsible as text messaging while driving.

The Russians are Coming... to Idaho

I realized at some point in Idaho that I have lived most of my life in the atomic/extraterrestrial corridor that runs from somewhere in Mexico, through Arizona, New Mexicio, Nevada and north to the Canadian border.

Cavin', Climbin', and Bummin'

Sometimes things work out in your favor and sometimes they don't. My hands are cold right now, but the coffee keeps my bones thawed. A lot has happened since South Dakota so let's get caught up to speed.

SimBike

South Dakota's best product.

Hours upon hours of pedaling through sometimes unstimulating terrain allows my brain to dig deep into its own depths for entertainment or excitement.
